Pest Control Service Management Software

Microsoft SQL Server is a comprehensive database server and information platform offering a complete set of enterprise-ready technologies and tools that help people derive the most value from information at the lowest total-cost-of-ownership. Enjoy high levels of performance, availability, and security; employ more productive management and development tools; and deliver pervasive insight with self-service business intelligence. A complete and integrated database platform, Microsoft SQL Server is one of the more popular database servers and data management platforms in use today.

Most of the text above is word for word straight from one of Microsoft's websites on SQL Server 2008. For those of you that may not be familiar with SQL Server, what it is in relation to ProServe 2012; is a Database Server Engine that handles all of the communications between ProServe 2012 and the databases designed for ProServe 2012.

SQL Server 2008 comes in many different editions for many different business platforms, we will keep it simple and say it comes in two editions, Full and Express. The Full editions no matter what the version name is can be very expensive that could costs thousands of dollars and is designed for medium to large server installations that have large databases. The Express edition is FREE... its designed for small business from single computer installations to small peer-to-peer or small business server networks.  Why would Microsoft give away any version of SQL Server? 1st, it provides a great starting point for small business to get introduced to SQL Server. 2nd, Most importantly, it provides ISV's such as myself the support and ability to develop and distribute SQL Server database applications such as ProServe 2012 to small business. You might think of it as major league and miner league baseball. Major being a Full edition of SQL Server and Miner being the Express edition. Both are still professional ball players, but in the miner leagues you don't need a bigger stadium.

SQL Server 2008 Express R2 Free Edition:

Again this information is straight from Microsoft's website. Take notice of the key words in this statement, I quote "SQL Server Express is a free edition of SQL Server ideal for developing and powering desktop, web and small server applications." ProServe 2012 is a desktop and small server application. You can download SQL Server 2008 Express edition from here...

Top Express Features:
  • Same database engine as other versions of SQL Server. *

Which SQL Server (Full or Express) Is Right For You?

The Express edition supports up to 10 GB of storage per database (about 1 million records give or take 50,000), when I developed ProServe 2012 I purposefully created five separate databases for this reason. Some databases holds more records than others so I will try to keep this simple by using Work Orders Per Month, Customer Accounts and Network Users as guidelines to help you determine what would be best for you.

** Accounts - Based on active service accounts.
** Orders - Based on work orders generated per month.
** Users - Number of concurrent users running ProServe 2012.

Single Users
  • 100 to 3,500 accounts with less than 1,500 orders - The Express Edition is more than enough.
  • If you have more than 3,500 accounts, chances are you're not a Single User.
Network Users (peer-to-peer)
  • 1st, the Main Computer that will host ProServe 2012 should be the strongest as far as hardware is concerned.
  • Up to 5 Users with less then 5,000 accounts or less than 2,500 orders - Express Edition will work but can only hold about 4 to 5 years of history before you will have to start purging the 5th year.
  • If you need more than 5 users you should make the Main Computer a dedicated server only machine. In other words, put the main computer in a closet and keep everyone off of it.
  • Anything over 6 to 7 users or more then 5,000 accounts with 2,500 or more orders, you should be considering a Small Business Server, that comes with a Full SQL Server edition, make sure it's SQL Server 2008 or newer.
Network Users (Small Business Server or Full Server)
  • Chances are you already have a Full Edition of SQL Server, make sure its 2008 or newer.
  • If you don't, the Express Edition should work fine if you have less then 2,500 orders.
